Why the studio exists
A building takes years to draw and pour. It deserves more than an hour with a phone before the client moves the furniture.

The corner room where the film flat files still live, fifteen years on.
It started with one commission and a borrowed 4×5. A young architect needed his first finished house photographed properly — verticals true, the evening light held, the millwork sharp enough to read the grain. The negatives came back better than either of us expected. He kept coming back. So did the people he showed them to.
We never chased volume. Where a busy studio might shoot three buildings in a week, we still work one at a time — scouting the rooms, learning which hour each was designed for, then returning when the light agrees. Fifteen years of that habit built a portfolio, and the portfolio built the studio.
Today Vandergroot is a small, deliberate practice out of Chelmsford, MA, on site across the Merrimack Valley and Greater Boston. The camera changed once or twice. The patience didn’t.

The Rules We Won’t Break
Level, true, and honest.
Verticals are corrected in-frame with a proper tilt-shift, never stretched in software after the fact. A wall that’s plumb in the building stays plumb in the photograph. It’s the difference between a record and a rendering — and it’s the first thing a good architect notices.
One hand, start to shelf
The eye that scouts the room is the eye that grades the file. No handing your building to a retouch farm overseas.
Light over lighting
We wait for the hour a room was built for rather than flooding it with strobes. Slower, and it shows.
Graded as one
A set of forty images reads as a single building — consistent colour, not forty separate guesses.

One house, one borrowed camera
A first finished residence shot on 4×5 film in Chelmsford. The negatives outran the fee, and the habit of doing it properly stuck.
The Moore Street room
The studio settled into its corner room at 26 Moore St — flat files, lightbox, and enough wall to pin a full building’s contact sheets while grading a set.
Tethered and level, by default
Adopted a fully tethered workflow so architects could stand at the monitor and call the frame on site — verticals corrected before the shutter, not after.
Across the valley
Civic, timber, and adaptive-reuse work carried the studio through Lowell, Lawrence, and Concord — one building a week, still hand-graded as one.
